Exclusive | Hunter Biden and His Laptop Enter the Cryptosphere With New $LAPTOP Meme Coin
Hunter Biden is entering the cryptocurrency world with a meme coin built around one of the most controversial objects in recent U.S. political history: his laptop. The token, called $LAPTOP, is scheduled to launch on September 9 on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network associated with Coinbase. Biden confirmed the project on Monday by posting the ticker and launch date on his verified X account.
The project is explicitly designed to turn the laptop controversy into a cryptocurrency brand. The computer became a major political story during the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign after Hunter Biden left it at a Delaware repair shop and material from the device subsequently became public. The episode generated years of political controversy, investigations and intense debate over how social-media platforms handled reporting about the files.
The new token will have a fixed supply of 1 billion coins. Hunter Biden and other members of the founding group are expected to receive approximately 30% of the supply. Those tokens will reportedly be locked for six months and then released over a period of more than two years, a structure intended to limit the possibility of an immediate large insider sell-off.
Another 20% of the supply has been earmarked for an airdrop. One of the most politically provocative elements of the distribution is that it targets cryptocurrency wallets whose owners lost money on President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP meme coin. Biden’s Substack subscribers and a mailing list maintained by video journalist Andrew Callaghan are also included in the planned distribution.
That mechanism gives $LAPTOP an unusually direct political dimension. Rather than simply using a celebrity’s name to attract speculative traders, the project is positioning itself against Trump’s cryptocurrency brand and attempting to appeal to people who were financially hurt by the collapse in value of the $TRUMP token.
Trump’s meme coin reached an extraordinary valuation shortly after its January 2025 launch but has since fallen dramatically. Reports on Monday put $TRUMP at roughly $2.25, around 97% below its January 2025 peak of $73.43. The planned $LAPTOP airdrop is therefore effectively aimed at a large group of crypto investors who remain underwater on Trump’s token.
The project also contains a highly unusual supply mechanism. As much as 30% of the total $LAPTOP supply could eventually be burned, depending on the outcome of a series of predetermined political, cryptocurrency and market-related events. Among the conditions reported are Bitcoin reaching a new record high, $LAPTOP surpassing the market value of $TRUMP and Democrats winning the 2028 presidential election.
Tokens connected to conditions that do not occur are reportedly intended to be donated to charity rather than simply remaining in circulation. The arrangement gives the meme coin a built-in political betting narrative, with the token’s future supply potentially changing according to events that have little direct relationship to the technology itself.
The launch is already generating activity in the wider meme-coin ecosystem. Within minutes of reports about the project appearing, numerous copycat tokens using the LAPTOP name began appearing on other blockchains. The Defiant reported that at least 14 distinct copycat tokens emerged across networks including Robinhood Chain, Solana, TON and BNB Chain, collectively generating millions of dollars in trading volume.
That development highlights one of the biggest risks surrounding celebrity and political meme coins: investors can easily buy an unofficial token believing it is the genuine project. Biden’s initial announcement did not include a contract address or detailed trading instructions, creating an environment in which opportunistic developers could quickly create tokens using the same name and ticker.
There is also a distinction between the new project and older tokens already using the LAPTOP name. Cryptocurrency data platforms already list earlier Hunter Biden’s Laptop tokens, including a Solana-based project. Those existing assets are separate from the newly announced token and should not automatically be assumed to be connected to Biden’s upcoming launch.
The choice of Base is also significant. Base has become one of the major Ethereum layer-2 networks for consumer crypto applications and speculative tokens. Launching there gives the project access to an established blockchain ecosystem while allowing transactions to be conducted with lower fees than on Ethereum’s main network.
The $LAPTOP launch comes as political figures and their families continue to become increasingly intertwined with cryptocurrency. Trump’s own digital-asset businesses have generated substantial attention, while his $TRUMP token demonstrated how quickly political identity can be transformed into a tradable digital asset.
Hunter Biden’s entry takes that trend in the opposite political direction. Instead of presenting cryptocurrency primarily as a financial innovation, $LAPTOP appears designed to turn a deeply partisan political controversy into a meme-driven financial product. Its success will therefore depend as much on online attention and political polarization as on traditional crypto fundamentals.
The project also arrives during a period when enthusiasm for speculative cryptocurrencies has become more complicated. Meme coins can generate enormous short-term trading volumes, but they generally have little intrinsic economic value and can experience extreme price swings. The combination of celebrity association, political messaging and limited fundamental utility makes them particularly sensitive to social-media sentiment.
For Hunter Biden, however, the laptop has already proved to be an extraordinarily durable piece of political symbolism. By converting its name into a cryptocurrency ticker, he is effectively extending the story into a new financial and internet culture where controversy itself can become an asset.
The biggest question now is whether $LAPTOP can transform political attention into a sustainable crypto market—or simply become another short-lived meme coin. Its September 9 launch is likely to attract enormous attention, but the project’s longer-term value will ultimately depend on liquidity, token distribution, investor demand and whether the political narrative can maintain momentum after the initial launch.
