Modi Birthday Focus: Work. Others’ Focus: Modi Amid Nationwide Celebrations and Prayers
Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 76 on September 17, 2026, but his own birthday schedule was dominated by official engagements rather than a conventional personal celebration. He inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi and later addressed a programme connected with the release of an instalment under the Annapurna Yojana in Bengal. The contrast was striking: while political leaders and supporters across the country marked the occasion with prayers, rallies and public events, Modi’s public-facing schedule remained centred on governance, technology and welfare.
At SEMICON India, Modi used the occasion to underline India’s ambition to become a trusted global semiconductor manufacturing hub. The conference, running from September 17 to 19, brings together companies, technology leaders and other participants around semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, investment, supply chains and skilled talent. His appearance therefore placed an important economic and technological policy event at the centre of his birthday-day engagements.
The second major engagement had a different emphasis: welfare delivery. Modi participated through videoconferencing in a programme associated with the release of an instalment under the Annapurna Yojana in Bengal, putting a government welfare initiative alongside the technology-focused SEMICON event. Together, the two engagements presented the birthday as another working day in the Prime Minister’s official calendar.
Outside the Prime Minister’s official schedule, however, September 17 became a day of extensive political and religious activity. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath joined Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and other leaders at Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, where prayers and rituals were conducted for Modi. Varanasi is also Modi’s parliamentary constituency.
In Vadnagar, Modi’s birthplace, Union Home Minister Amit Shah led another major programme, including a Maha Aarti. Bike rallies were also flagged off from Varanasi and Vadnagar, with participants set to travel through several states as part of programmes highlighting Modi’s 25 years in public life.
The celebrations extended well beyond temples. Reports from across the country described blood-donation drives, cleanliness campaigns, health initiatives, lamp-lighting programmes, public outreach and other service activities. The BJP’s broader “Seva Sankalp Abhiyan” is scheduled to continue from September 17 to October 17, turning the birthday into the starting point of a month-long programme of service-oriented activities.
The religious dimension was particularly visible. BJP workers and supporters organised havans, aartis and other prayers in several cities, while special events were held in places including Varanasi, Vadnagar, Delhi, Jammu and Patna. In Varanasi, prayers were combined with blood-donation and cleanliness activities, illustrating how the political celebrations were being linked with public-service programmes.
Modi himself responded to the nationwide greetings by thanking people for their wishes, affection and blessings. In a message posted on September 17, he also expressed appreciation for those participating in “Seva” activities and called for continued collective work towards building a “Viksit Bharat.”
The resulting picture of Modi’s 76th birthday was therefore divided between two very different kinds of attention. The Prime Minister’s own programme projected work — semiconductors, manufacturing ambitions and welfare delivery — while ministers, chief ministers, BJP workers and supporters placed Modi personally at the centre of prayers, tributes, rallies and public celebrations across the country.
The occasion also carried a wider political significance because September 17 marked 25 years since Modi entered the top tier of public office, beginning with his tenure as Gujarat chief minister in 2001. The BJP has used the anniversary to frame the month-long programme around public service and Modi’s political journey, making the 76th birthday simultaneously a personal milestone and a broader party-organised public outreach exercise.
At the same time, the celebrations drew political criticism. Congress leader Pawan Khera alleged that public funds and government machinery were being used for birthday-related programmes, including participation by officials and government institutions. Those allegations are contested political claims and were presented by Congress as criticism of the scale and organisation of the celebrations.
What stands out from September 17, therefore, is the contrast in emphasis: Modi spent his birthday performing official duties, while much of the political establishment and his supporters spent the day celebrating Modi. That distinction — governance on the Prime Minister’s schedule and prayers, tributes and service activities around the country — defined the public imagery of his 76th birthday.
