Ahmed al-Sharaa has been appointed as Syria’s interim president following the ousting of Bashar al-Assad on December 8, 2024. His appointment was announced by state media on January 29, 2025, and he is tasked with leading the country through a transitional phase aimed at establishing a new governance structure.
Leadership Transition: Al-Sharaa, recognized as the de facto leader of Syria, was appointed during a conference attended by military leaders and representatives from various factions involved in the offensive against Assad. This marks a significant shift in leadership after decades of Assad’s rule.
Governance Structure: He is authorized to form a temporary legislative council that will operate until a new constitution is ratified. The previous parliament has been dissolved, and the 2012 constitution has been annulled. Al-Sharaa’s administration aims to integrate all military factions into a unified national army, signaling an effort to stabilize governance in the post-Assad era.
Political Goals: Al-Sharaa has pledged to initiate a political transition that includes organizing a national conference, establishing an inclusive government, and eventually holding elections.
