Crisis in Congo; Indian Embassy in Congo asks Indian nationals to depart immediately to safer locations

Crisis in Congo: The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing a severe escalation in conflict, particularly with the M23 rebel group, which has recently captured Goma, the largest city in eastern DRC. Reports indicate that over 700 individuals have been killed in the past week due to intense fighting, and the situation continues to deteriorate rapidly.

Indian Embassy Advisory: In response to the escalating violence, the Indian Embassy in Kinshasa has issued an urgent advisory for Indian nationals, particularly those in Bukavu, to immediately depart to safer locations. The advisory emphasizes that M23 rebels are reportedly only 20-25 kilometers away from Bukavu, and urges citizens to utilize available means of transportation while borders and commercial routes remain open.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with estimates suggesting that at least 773 people have died due to clashes between Congolese forces and the M23 rebels. The situation is compounded by reports of mass graves as residents are forced to evacuate.

The conflict has drawn international attention, with calls for a peaceful resolution from various nations, including India. The Indian government has expressed concern over the safety of its nationals and is actively monitoring the situation. Approximately 1,000 Indian nationals were reported to be living in Goma prior to the recent violence, many of whom have since relocated.

The M23 group is considered one of the most powerful among numerous armed factions vying for control in eastern DRC, a region rich in valuable minerals. Their activities are reportedly supported by Rwandan forces, which complicates the geopolitical landscape further.

The situation remains fluid, and individuals in affected areas are advised to stay informed through local media and maintain a low profile amidst rising tensions.
