China claims it mediated India-Pakistan conflict in May 2025

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi claimed on December 30, 2025, that Beijing mediated tensions between India and Pakistan during a conflict in May 2025. India has rejected this assertion, insisting the four-day standoff—known as Operation Sindoor from May 7-10—was resolved bilaterally through direct military-to-military talks between the Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMOs).

The May 2025 India-Pakistan clash involved intense military exchanges, pushing the nuclear-armed neighbors close to escalation, and marked the first major test of Chinese hardware like J-10C jets and PL-15 missiles used by Pakistan against Indian forces. Indian officials later accused China of providing Pakistan with real-time intelligence on Indian positions, treating the event as a “live lab” for its weapons systems.

Wang Yi stated China acted with “sincerity and good faith” in mediating multiple 2025 conflicts, including India-Pakistan, without interfering in internal affairs. This follows similar credit-taking by US President Donald Trump, both dismissed by New Delhi as inaccurate. China has not detailed its mediation role publicly beyond Wang’s remarks.

India described China’s claim as “bizarre” and reaffirmed no third-party involvement occurred, with the ceasefire resulting solely from DGMO-level bilateral communication. Despite this, India-China ties saw diplomatic engagement later in 2025, including PM Narendra Modi’s visit to the SCO summit in Tianjin.
