Congress alleges Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife holds three passports
Congress has accused Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma (also referred to as Renuka Devi Sarma), of holding passports from three foreign countries: the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. The party, led by spokesperson Pawan Khera, also alleged she owns undisclosed assets abroad, including businesses in the UAE and up to Rs 52,000 crore stashed in a US company in Wyoming, which were not listed in Sarma’s election affidavit ahead of the April 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Sarma’s Response
Sarma rejected the claims as “fabricated” and “digital manipulation,” pointing to discrepancies like surname errors (Sarma vs. Sharma), spelling mistakes (e.g., “Egyptiann”), and mismatched photos in the documents shared by Congress. He threatened to file a defamation suit against Khera within 48 hours and vowed legal action.
Congress’s Demands
Congress demanded Sarma’s disqualification from the April 9 elections, his arrest for non-disclosure, and a probe into his wife’s nationality and Indian citizenship status. They plan to approach the Election Commission over the matter.
