Mamata Banerjee Refuses To Resign
Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign as West Bengal Chief Minister following her Trinamool Congress party’s defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a sweeping victory with around 206-208 seats in the 294-member assembly, ending TMC’s 15-year rule. TMC won approximately 79-84 seats, marking a historic shift as BJP became the first right-of-centre party to win in West Bengal since 1937.
In a May 5 press conference, Banerjee rejected the results as a “conspiracy” and “looted” votes, alleging bias by the Election Commission and Central forces. She stated, “No question of resigning; we didn’t lose morally,” and refused to visit Raj Bhavan.
Experts note her term ends automatically on May 6 with the assembly’s expiry; resignation is a convention, not mandatory. She may act as caretaker until the new CM’s oath, but refusal risks dismissal by the Governor.
