Google updates to AI Mode and AI Overviews
Google has significantly advanced its search experience by integrating AI Overviews and a new AI Mode into Google Search, effectively turning standard search into a more conversational, AI‑driven experience.
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews (AIO) are AI‑generated summaries at the top of many Google Search results that synthesize information from multiple web pages and then link out to the sources. They started as “Search Generative Experience” (SGE) and were rolled out more broadly in 2024–2025, now appearing in over 200 countries and languages, and reportedly on roughly half of all Google queries by early 2026.
What is AI Mode?
AI Mode is an experimental “mode” inside Search that replaces the classic SERP with an AI‑driven assistant interface, powered by a custom version of Google’s Gemini models (now up to Gemini 3). In this mode, you can ask complex, multi‑part questions, get reasoned, conversational answers, and ask follow‑up questions while Google internally fans out queries across many subtopics and data sources.
Key recent updates
-
Gemini‑based upgrades: AI Overviews now run on Gemini 2.0 (and later Gemini 3), giving better answers for harder tasks like coding, advanced math, and multimodal queries.
-
Follow‑ups → AI Mode: Clicking follow‑up questions in AI Overviews now often takes users straight into AI Mode, shifting them from a traditional SERP into a sustained, chat‑like interaction.
-
Wider rollout: Both AI Overviews and AI Mode have expanded from Labs to broader user groups, with AI Overviews now visible on well over 40%–50% of searches in many regions.
What this means for users
-
Power users / researchers get a more “assistant‑like” experience: they can explore concepts, compare options, and plan complex workflows within Search instead of manually stitching together many pages.
-
Content publishers and SEO face a major shift: traffic now depends not only on organic ranking but also on being “seen” and understood by Google’s AI so the model can confidently cite and link to your pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
