Violence erupts in West Bengal after election results

Violence has broken out in West Bengal following the 2026 assembly election results, where the BJP secured a historic victory by winning around 207 of 294 seats, ending TMC’s 15-year rule. At least four people were killed in clashes between BJP and TMC supporters, with injuries, arson, and vandalism reported in Kolkata and districts like Birbhum, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas.

Election Outcome

The BJP triumphed in the two-phase polls held on April 23 and 29, 2026, with results declared on May 4, achieving over 92% voter turnout—the highest ever in the state. This marked the first right-wing party’s win since 1937, fueled by issues like electoral roll revisions, migration, corruption allegations, and anti-incumbency against TMC. TMC secured about 80 seats, while others trailed far behind.

Violence Details

Clashes erupted immediately after results, including murders of two BJP and two TMC workers, office vandalisms in areas like Tollygunge, Kasba, and Beliaghata, and public property damage in Topsia and Tiljala. One police officer was injured by gunfire amid stone-pelting and attacks between rival supporters. Incidents continued into May 6, with bodies found and accusations of hacking in Nanoor.

Party Reactions

TMC accused BJP supporters of “brutal murders” and targeting their offices, calling it an exposure of the victors’ “true face.” BJP claimed TMC factions or losing workers incited violence against their members and denied orchestrating attacks, vowing peace. Both parties traded blame as police confirmed the deaths and deployed forces.

Security Response

Nearly 80,000 central forces were already deployed pre-results, with police now probing incidents and summoning officials amid law-and-order disturbances. A repoll occurred in one constituency on May 21 due to malpractice claims, but post-result unrest persists as of early May.
