A Year After Operation Sindoor: How India’s Defence Tech Is Rewriting War

One year after Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, India’s defence technology has advanced significantly, emphasizing self-reliance and modern warfare capabilities. This operation, a retaliation to the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, involved precision missile and drone strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

India targeted nine sites linked to Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen using homegrown missiles, drones, and loitering munitions, marking the first drone battle between the nuclear-armed neighbors. The four-day conflict ended with a ceasefire on May 10 after Pakistan’s retaliatory strikes, showcasing India’s tech-driven precision without hitting military or civilian sites per official claims. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed it as proof of India’s military tech prowess.

Operation Sindoor accelerated indigenous drone warfare, AI-driven systems, cyber intelligence, and anti-drone tech, with over 38,000 drones now registered and eased regulations. Firms like Zulu Defence reported 333% growth in swarm drones and integrated ecosystems. Air defence systems such as Akash, S-400, and Akashteer proved effective in real combat.

Post-operation, India raised five Bhairav battalions, two Rudra brigades, and Ashni drone platoons along borders, enhancing tri-service integration. Defence budget rose 9.53%, boosting procurement in electronic warfare and layered defences. A new doctrine prioritizes speed, precision, and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ via public-private partnerships.

Private startups now collaborate directly with the Army on autonomous platforms and decision AI, rewriting warfare rules. Exports and stocks of firms like HAL and BEL surged, positioning India as a global defence partner. This shift from episodic responses to sustained tech deterrence defines the post-Sindoor era.
