Bar council writes to CJI after Andhra Pradesh High Court judge orders police custody for a lawyer
The Bar Council of India (BCI) wrote to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on May 6, 2026, seeking urgent intervention after Justice Tarlada Rajasekhar Rao of the Andhra Pradesh High Court ordered a young lawyer into 24-hour police custody for failing to produce a prior order copy during a hearing on May 4.
A viral courtroom video captured the judge rebuking the advocate for “indolent” behavior, ignoring his pleas of pain and folded-hand apologies, and directing police to enforce custody despite the lawyer’s requests for grace. The order stemmed from a petition challenging a lookout circular and passport impounding, but was later cancelled following intervention by the Andhra Pradesh High Court Bar Association.
BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra described the judge’s actions as “grossly inappropriate,” eroding young lawyers’ confidence and judicial dignity through public humiliation rather than lawful correction. The letter urged CJI to review the video, order, and circumstances; withdraw the judge’s judicial work; consider his transfer; and provide training on temperament and bar-bench relations.
The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) also urged CJI intervention, stressing judicial strength via patience over fear, amid broader concerns for young advocates. CJI has reportedly sought a report on the matter.
