‘Gang-raped’ by 8 men, disillusioned with police, 2 Jodhpur sisters die by suicide in 2 months
Two sisters in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, have died by suicide within about two months of each other after allegedly enduring years of gang‑rape, blackmail, and threats by a group of eight men, with their family accusing the police of serious negligence and inaction.
What happened
-
The elder sister, a woman in her 20s from the Kherapa area of Jodhpur, reportedly died by hanging on 20 March after years of alleged sexual assault and extortion by the accused.
-
Her younger sister, a married woman and mother of two, allegedly filed an FIR on 11 April naming eight men for gangrape, criminal intimidation, and blackmail, claiming obscene videos of her elder sister were used to extort and repeatedly assault both of them.
Role of the police and the second suicide
-
The family alleges that despite the FIR, no arrests or decisive action were taken for weeks, and the accused continued to threaten and intimidate the younger sister even after the complaint.
-
On 15 May, the younger sister climbed a village water tank, protested the lack of action, and reportedly consumed a poisonous substance in front of police and locals; she later died in hospital.
Public and political reaction
-
The incident has triggered outrage in Jodhpur and Rajasthan, with local communities, including the Rajput Samaj, staging protests and demanding accountability from the police and district administration.
-
State officials have acknowledged the case and indicated that the police actions are being reviewed, while the brother of the victims has filed a written complaint urging fast‑track investigation and arrests of the eight accused.
