Ammonia Gas Leak at Seafood Factory in Tamil Nadu Leaves Seven Dead, Dozens Hospitalised

A major industrial tragedy struck Tamil Nadu on Sunday when a large-scale ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing and export unit in Tiruvallur district claimed the lives of seven workers and left more than 60 others hospitalized. The incident occurred at a seafood export facility near Periyapalayam, triggering panic among workers and nearby residents.

What Happened?

According to preliminary reports, ammonia gas leaked from the seafood processing facility located at Kannigaipair/Manjangaranai near Periyapalayam in Tiruvallur district. Many workers, including a large number of women and migrant labourers from states such as Odisha, Assam, and Jharkhand, were exposed to the toxic gas. Workers reportedly experienced breathing difficulties, dizziness, eye irritation, and severe respiratory distress shortly after the leak spread across the premises.

Emergency services, police personnel, fire and rescue teams, health officials, and district administration officers rushed to the scene. Several critically affected workers were shifted to hospitals in Chennai for advanced treatment.

Casualties and Medical Response

Officials confirmed that seven workers died following exposure to the ammonia gas. More than 60 workers were hospitalized, with several admitted to intensive care units and some placed on ventilator support due to severe respiratory complications. Authorities reported that many of the victims were young women employed at the seafood processing unit.

Medical teams were deployed to provide emergency treatment, while critically ill patients were transferred to major government hospitals in Chennai for specialized care.

Government and NDRF Action

The Tamil Nadu government has ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. Chief Minister M.K. Vijay reportedly sought a detailed report within 24 hours and directed senior ministers and officials to coordinate relief and rescue operations. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed a specialized Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response team to assist local authorities in containment and safety assessment efforts.

Safety Concerns Under Scrutiny

Initial investigations indicate that the leak may have originated from equipment or pipeline systems associated with ammonia-based refrigeration commonly used in seafood processing plants. Authorities are examining whether equipment failure, valve malfunction, maintenance deficiencies, or violations of industrial safety norms contributed to the disaster.

The tragedy has once again raised serious questions about occupational safety standards in chemical-intensive food processing industries. Tamil Nadu has witnessed several ammonia-related industrial incidents in recent years, including leaks in Chennai’s Ennore industrial zone and fish-processing facilities in Thoothukudi.

Why Ammonia Leaks Are Dangerous

Ammonia is widely used in industrial refrigeration systems but is highly toxic when released into the atmosphere. Exposure can cause:

  • Severe breathing difficulties
  • Eye and skin irritation
  • Lung damage
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Fatal respiratory failure in high concentrations

Industrial safety experts have long warned that inadequate monitoring systems, poor maintenance practices, and insufficient emergency preparedness can turn ammonia leaks into mass-casualty events.

As investigators continue to determine the exact cause of the leak, attention is expected to focus on compliance with factory safety regulations, worker protection measures, emergency response preparedness, and accountability for potential negligence. The incident is likely to prompt renewed calls for stricter enforcement of industrial safety standards across India’s seafood processing and export sector.
