Active shooter reported at Brown University
An active shooter incident occurred at Brown University’s Barus and Holley engineering building in Providence, Rhode Island, on December 13, 2025, around 4:22 p.m. local time. Two people were confirmed killed, with eight others shot and in critical but stable condition, and a ninth injured by shrapnel.
University alerts instructed students to lock doors, silence phones, and hide until further notice during final exam week. Initial reports of a suspect in custody were retracted, and no arrests have been made as law enforcement continues searching for the gunman, described as a male dressed in black. Additional unconfirmed reports of shots near Governor Street were later clarified as incorrect.
Multiple buildings remain on lockdown or shelter-in-place orders, with a heavy police presence, emergency services, and FBI involvement. President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation. Victims, including possible students, were transported to local hospitals.
