Adani Group plans nuclear project in Uttar Pradesh
Adani Group is in advanced talks with the Uttar Pradesh government to develop India’s first private-sector commercial nuclear power project. The initiative involves eight small modular reactors (SMRs), each with 200 MW capacity, totaling 1,600 MW.
The proposed plant requires a riverside location for water supply, though none has been finalized yet. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) is designing the 200 MW SMRs, with construction expected to take 5-6 years post-approval due to Adani’s novice status in nuclear energy.
Talks center on a public-private partnership where state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. (NPCIL) would operate the facility on Adani’s behalf. This aligns with recent Indian government reforms opening the nuclear sector to private investment.
The move expands Adani’s low-carbon energy portfolio amid rising power demand from data centers and AI. It supports India’s Nuclear Energy Mission, including Rs 200 billion for SMR R&D announced in the February 2025 Union Budget.
