Bangladesh Navy Chief meets Pakistan Army Chief in Rawalpindi
Bangladesh Navy Chief Admiral Mohammad Nazmul Hassan visited Pakistan and met with Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir in Rawalpindi. This visit marks the second high-level visit by the Bangladesh Armed Forces to Pakistan in recent weeks.
Discussions: Both dignitaries discussed mutual interests, the regional security environment, and opportunities for enhanced bilateral defense and security cooperation.
Areas of Cooperation: Discussions also covered naval cooperation and participation in a multinational naval exercise organized by the Pakistan Navy. There is also a plan for Pakistan to launch training programs for the Bangladeshi military.
Appreciation for Pakistan’s Role: Admiral Hassan commended Pakistan’s contributions to regional peace and stability, particularly acknowledging the Multinational Maritime Exercise Aman 2025 and the Aman Dialogue. He also recognized the role of Pakistan’s armed forces in fostering regional peace and stability.
Statements on Bilateral Relations: Khawaja Asif welcomed the dignitary and stated that Pakistan values its relationship with Bangladesh. Nazm conveyed a goodwill gesture from the people of Bangladesh and expressed Bangladesh’s aspiration for vibrant defense cooperation between the two countries, especially navies.
The visit indicates a potential shift in regional dynamics:
Focus on Strengthening Ties: Bangladesh is reportedly focusing on strengthening relations with Pakistan.
Strategic Implications: This development has strategic implications, especially considering that Bangladesh sources a significant portion of its arms from China. Closer ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh could potentially amplify China’s influence, particularly in the context of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Gwadar Port.
Internal and External Factors: Dhaka may seek Islamabad’s diplomatic backing amid Western pressure and to seek regional support to address the Rohingya crisis.
