Bangladesh youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi dies in Singapore
Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent Bangladesh youth leader, died on December 18, 2025, in a Singapore hospital from injuries sustained in an assassination attempt. His death triggered widespread protests and violence in Dhaka.
Hadi, 32, was a key figure in the 2024 student-led uprising that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, forcing her to flee to India. He led the Inqilab Mancha protest group, criticized India openly, and was campaigning for a parliamentary seat in the February 2026 elections.
On December 12, 2025, masked gunmen shot Hadi while he left a mosque in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. He received initial treatment in Bangladesh before airlift to Singapore General Hospital on December 15, where he succumbed despite medical efforts.
Thousands protested in Dhaka demanding justice, setting fire to buildings including newspaper offices. Interim leader Muhammad Yunus called it an “irreparable loss,” declared a half-day mourning on December 20, and vowed to pursue the killers.
