Bihar Jamui: Three Arrested After Men Allegedly Harass Class 10 Students on Road, Viral Video Triggers Outrage
Three people have been arrested in Bihar’s Jamui district after a video surfaced showing a group of men allegedly stopping and harassing two Class 10 students on a public road. The victims, a minor boy and girl, were reportedly returning from a coaching class when they were intercepted by the group on the evening of September 19.
According to police and media reports, the two students had gone to the Madwa Pahad area after attending their coaching classes. While returning on a scooter, they were allegedly stopped by several men who surrounded them, forced them off the vehicle and subjected them to harassment and assault.
Videos of the incident later circulated widely on social media. The footage reportedly shows the teenagers surrounded by a group of men, with the girl allegedly subjected to inappropriate physical contact and being dragged or lifted while the boy attempted to intervene. The videos prompted widespread demands for police action.
Jamui Superintendent of Police Bishwajeet Dayal said police were able to trace the victims with the help of the registration number of a vehicle visible in the video. Police subsequently registered a case and began identifying those allegedly involved in the incident.
Police have arrested three people so far, while reports indicate that investigators have identified several other individuals allegedly present during the incident. Authorities have said further arrests could follow as the investigation progresses.
The case has been registered under relevant provisions, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, according to reports. The use of POCSO reflects the fact that both victims are minors and places the alleged sexual misconduct within India’s child-protection legal framework.
Police said the incident itself occurred on September 19, but the case gained wider attention after the video became viral two days later. The police response followed the circulation of the footage and efforts to establish the identities of the victims and suspects.
The incident has also generated a wider public debate over the safety of minors travelling on public roads and the phenomenon of groups confronting young people under the guise of questioning or moral policing. The videos have intensified calls for accountability and for authorities to ensure that public spaces remain safe for students.
Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi publicly condemned the incident and questioned the safety of girls and children on public roads. He also called for prosecution under the POCSO Act. His comments have added a political dimension to an incident that is already under police investigation.
The immediate legal focus remains on establishing the full sequence of events, identifying everyone involved and determining the precise offences supported by the evidence. With three arrests already made and additional suspects reportedly identified, the investigation is expected to establish individual roles before further legal action is taken.
