Daily Average Missing Persons in India

India lacks an official daily average for missing persons nationwide, as the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports annual totals of reported cases, which include both new and unresolved prior-year cases.

The most recent detailed national data from NCRB for 2023 shows 312,622 total missing males and additional females (estimated around 555,937 for parity, totaling approximately 868,559).

This equates to roughly 2,380 reported missing persons per day on average for 2023 (868,559 ÷ 365).

Newly reported cases (excluding backlog) have risen, from about 3.8 lakh in 2019 to nearly 4.85 lakh in 2023, averaging around 1,330 new cases daily in the latter year.

About 53% of cases were traced in 2023, leaving over 4 lakh untraced nationally.

Women and children comprise the majority: two-thirds female, with 1.4 lakh children missing.

In Delhi, early 2026 data indicates 54 missing persons reported daily (807 in first 15 days).

Madhya Pradesh sees about 130 women/girls missing daily based on 2020–2026 figures.

NCRB data relies on police FIRs and may underreport actual incidents, especially in rural areas.

Latest full-year NCRB reports (2024–2025) are unavailable as of February 2026; figures reflect 2023.
