Delhi New CM 2025? Delhi Next Chief Minister?
Following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory in the Delhi Assembly elections on February 8, 2025, the party is preparing to form a government in the national capital after 27 years. The announcement of the next Chief Minister is highly anticipated.
Election Results: The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly, ousting the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power. AAP secured 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any seats.
Possible Candidates: Several names are being considered for the Chief Minister position, including Parvesh Verma, who defeated AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Other potential candidates include Delhi BJP chief Virender Sachdeva, Vijender Gupta, and newly elected MLAs such as Mohan Singh Bisht, Ashish Sood, and Pawan Sharma.
Considerations for Selection: The BJP leadership is evaluating options based on factors such as vote share patterns by caste and sub-community. Other criteria include a clean image, recommendation from the RSS, an age cut-off of 55, and organizational experience. The possibility of having more than one deputy Chief Minister is also being considered.
Woman Chief Minister: There is speculation that the BJP may consider a woman MLA for the Chief Minister post. Potential women candidates include Rekha Gupta, Shikha Roy, Poonam Sharma, and Neelam Pahalwan.
Legislative Party Meeting: The date for the BJP Legislature Party meeting to elect the leader of the House is yet to be finalized.
Oath-Taking Ceremony: The oath-taking ceremony is expected to be held after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his US trip around February 15. Chief Ministers of all NDA-ruled states are likely to be invited to the event.
AAP’s Response: AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is meeting with Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and party MLAs to discuss the election defeat. AAP leader Atishi has resigned as Chief Minister of Delhi.
INDIA Alliance: Despite contesting separately in the Delhi elections, Congress leader Rajiv Shukla stated that the INDIA alliance remains united for the upcoming Lok Sabha election. BJP leader Prakash Reddy, however, claimed that the INDI Alliance is falling apart.
