Denmark To Boost Security As Donald Trump Ramps Up Threat To Take Over Greenland
Denmark is significantly enhancing its security measures in response to renewed threats from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory under Danish control. This escalation comes after Trump reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland and suggested he might consider military action to achieve this goal during a press conference on January 7, 2025.
Denmark’s Security Enhancements
On January 27, 2025, the Danish government announced a substantial defense agreement worth approximately 14.6 billion kroner (around $2 billion). This initiative aims to bolster Denmark’s military presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, particularly around Greenland. Key components of the agreement include:
Acquisition of Naval Vessels: Three new Arctic naval ships will be built to enhance operational capabilities.
Surveillance Drones: Two long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will be added for extensive surveillance.
Improved Intelligence Capabilities: Investments will be made in satellite technology and ground-based sensors to strengthen situational awareness.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the necessity of these measures due to “serious challenges regarding security and defence” in the region, highlighting the importance of maintaining sovereignty and supporting NATO efforts.
Greenlanders’ Opposition to U.S. Control
A recent opinion poll revealed that 85% of Greenlanders oppose joining the United States, contradicting Trump’s claims that there is local support for such a move. The poll was conducted by Verian between January 22 and 27, 2025, with a sample size of 497 residents aged 18 and older. Only 6% expressed support for joining the U.S., while 9% were undecided. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has reiterated that the future of the territory should be determined by its people, advocating for independence from Denmark as a viable option.
In light of these developments, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is currently on a European tour aimed at securing support from allies to reinforce Denmark’s position regarding Greenland. She has met with leaders in Berlin, Paris, and Brussels to discuss collective security efforts amidst growing geopolitical tensions, particularly due to Russian activities in Ukraine and increased Arctic militarization by various nations.
