Egypt to host emergency Arab summit on Feb. 27 to discuss ‘serious’ Palestinian developments

Egypt is set to host an emergency Arab summit on February 27 to discuss developments regarding Palestine, which it has described as “serious”. The announcement of the summit follows regional and global condemnation of U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion to “take over the Gaza Strip” from Israel and create a “Riviera of the Middle East” after resettling Palestinians elsewhere.

Summit Announcement The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday, February 9, 2025, that Egypt will host an emergency Arab summit on February 27. The summit will address “new and dangerous developments” concerning the Palestinian cause.

Trump’s Proposal The summit comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, which has sparked outrage across the Arab world. Trump suggested “taking over” Gaza from Israel and transforming it into a “Riviera of the Middle East” after resettling Palestinians.

Rejection of Trump’s Plan Egyptian President Fatt el-Si and Jordanian King Abdullah II have rejected Trump’s proposal to resettle 1.8 million Palestinians residing in Gaza and for the U.S. to assume control of the territory. Despite this, Trump maintains that they will eventually accept the proposition.

Summit Coordination The summit will be convened in Cairo, in coordination with the Kingdom of Bahrain, the current president of the Arab League summit, and the General Secretariat of the Arab League. The decision to hold the summit followed consultations with Arab countries, including the State of Palestine, which requested the summit.

Arab Reactions Trump’s proposal has been met with wide condemnation from Palestinians, Arab countries, and many other nations, including Canada, France, Germany, and the UK. Hamas has also rejected Trump’s plans, viewing them as an attempt to eliminate the Palestinian cause.

Alternative Proposals Arab countries, led by Egypt, are reportedly working on alternatives to Trump’s displacement plan, including a major reconstruction initiative in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, and Gaza without displacing residents. This plan would be funded through Arab contracts to entice Trump and divert his attention from forced relocation.
