Former Karnataka DGP Om Prakash found dead at Bengaluru home

Former Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Om Prakash was found dead with multiple stab injuries at his residence in Bengaluru’s upscale HSR Layout on Sunday, April 20, 2025. His body was discovered lying in a pool of blood on the ground floor of his three-storied house. A sharp weapon was found near his body, though police are yet to confirm if it was the murder weapon.

Om Prakash, aged 68, was a 1981-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, originally from Champaran district in Bihar. He held a master’s degree in Geology and served as Karnataka’s DGP from March 1, 2015, until his retirement in 2017. Over his career, he held various significant posts including Additional SP of Ballari, SP in Shivamogga, Uttara Kannada, and Chikkamagaluru, and roles in the Lokayukta Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The police have detained his wife, Pallavi, and are questioning her along with their daughter, who were both present at the residence during the incident. Reports indicate that Pallavi allegedly confessed to the killing, describing Om Prakash as a “monster” in a call to a friend before informing the police herself. The wife and daughter locked themselves in a room following the incident until police arrived.

The investigation is ongoing, with the police registering an FIR based on a complaint filed by Om Prakash’s son. Authorities have ruled out forced entry and are exploring possible motives including family property disputes and marital issues. Om Prakash had reportedly expressed concerns about threats to his life to close associates prior to his death. No arrests have been made yet, and the police are awaiting post-mortem results to provide further details.

Senior police officials, including Karnataka DGP Alok Mohan and Bengaluru City Police Commissioner B Dayananda, have visited the crime scene. A forensic team is involved in the investigation to secure the site and gather evidence.

Om Prakash was found dead with multiple stab wounds at his Bengaluru home. His wife Pallavi has been detained and is a prime suspect, with reports of a confession. The incident appears to be internal, with family disputes suspected as a possible motive. Police continue to investigate with no arrests made yet. Om Prakash was a respected IPS officer who served as Karnataka’s DGP from 2015 to 2017.
