Greenland’s new PM rejects Trump’s latest threat: ‘We do not belong to anyone else’
Greenland’s new Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, has firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent assertions regarding the potential acquisition of the island, declaring that “the United States will not get Greenland” and emphasizing that “we do not belong to anyone else”. This statement comes in the wake of heightened tensions following Trump’s remarks about wanting to bring Greenland under U.S. control, which he described as crucial for national security.
Nielsen, who took office on March 28, 2025, is the youngest prime minister in Greenland’s history and leads a coalition government formed shortly after the March 11 elections. His administration prioritizes economic independence and self-determination for Greenlanders. In a Facebook post, he reiterated that the island’s future is to be determined by its inhabitants, stating, “We shape our own destiny”.
The political backdrop includes a visit from U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Greenland, which sparked local outrage due to his comments about Denmark’s handling of Greenland’s security. Nielsen’s coalition government reflects a strong sentiment among Greenlanders against foreign control, with many citizens favoring eventual independence from Denmark rather than alignment with the U.S.
