Hunger crisis deepens in Gaza as 10 more starvation deaths reported
The hunger crisis in Gaza has deepened significantly, with health officials reporting at least 10 more deaths from starvation within the last 24 hours, raising the total number of starvation-related deaths to 111 since the conflict began in October 2023. This crisis is largely driven by an ongoing Israeli blockade that has severely restricted the flow of food, clean water, and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip, home to about 2.1 million people. The blockade, combined with continuous Israeli military actions, has created what some aid groups and the WHO describe as a man-made mass starvation and famine-like conditions.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health and the WHO report that malnutrition is widespread, with around 10% of the population suffering moderate to severe malnutrition, including about 20% of pregnant and breastfeeding women.
At least 21 children under five have died of malnutrition this year, with many more severely malnourished.
Almost 100,000 women and children are suffering acute malnutrition needing urgent treatment.
Since March 2025, the blockade has stopped all goods entering Gaza, with only limited aid trickling through since May, primarily via the contested Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.
Aid organizations criticize restrictions and security issues, including deadly attacks on people seeking aid that have killed hundreds.
The World Food Programme states that a quarter of Gaza’s population is living in famine-like conditions, and the hunger crisis is intensified by violence and obstruction of humanitarian aid operations.
Hospitals are overwhelmed with malnutrition cases and trauma from conflict, and many residents are going days with little or no food.
Aid groups call for urgent international action to end the blockade and ensure safe, unobstructed delivery of humanitarian aid to prevent further deaths.
This severe hunger crisis is unfolding amid intense military conflict and a blockade preventing adequate food and aid supply, resulting in growing death tolls from starvation and malnutrition in Gaza.
