Abhay Singh, widely known as “IITian Baba,” has been expelled from the Juna Akhara, a prominent sect of sadhus, following allegations of disrespecting his guru, Mahant Someshwar Puri. The expulsion occurred on January 19, 2025, during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The decision was made after Singh reportedly used abusive language against his guru, which the Akhara’s leadership deemed unacceptable and a violation of the guru-shishya tradition, a core principle of their spiritual practices.

Background and Allegations

Abhay Singh is a former aerospace engineer from IIT Bombay who transitioned to a spiritual path, gaining significant attention at the Maha Kumbh for his application of scientific principles to spirituality. His rise to fame included a substantial social media following, where he shared his insights and experiences. However, tensions escalated when he allegedly clashed with his guru over his growing popularity and public persona. Following this incident, he was banned from the Akhara’s premises until he demonstrates respect and discipline towards his guru.

Reaction and Defense

In response to the allegations, Singh has denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the accusations stem from jealousy over his rising fame. He stated that he had previously clarified there was no formal guru-disciple relationship with Mahant Someshwar Puri and accused the Akhara members of attempting to undermine him due to his popularity. Singh described the situation as an attempt to defame him and expressed that he felt driven out of his camp unjustly.

Juna Akhara’s Position

The leadership of Juna Akhara has firmly condemned Singh’s actions. Mahant Hari Giri, chief patron of the Akhara, emphasized that discipline is fundamental to their community and that disrespect towards one’s guru is a serious offense within Sanatan Dharma. They further clarified that Singh was not recognized as a disciple within their ranks and that his behavior was not befitting of a sadhu.

This incident marks a significant moment in the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, highlighting the tensions between traditional values and modern interpretations of spirituality within such religious gatherings.
