Islamic State leader in Iraq and Syria killed, US says

The leader of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq and Syria, identified as Abdallah Makki Muslih al-Rifai, also known as Abu Khadija, has been killed in a coordinated operation involving Iraqi intelligence and US-led coalition forces. This operation was conducted in Iraq’s Anbar province on Thursday night, with confirmation of the leader’s death announced on Friday.

Abu Khadija was considered one of the most dangerous terrorists globally and held a significant role within IS, overseeing logistics, planning, and financial management worldwide.

The operation was praised by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and US President Donald Trump, who highlighted the collaborative effort between Iraqi, US, and Kurdish forces.

Both Abu Khadija and another IS member were found deceased, equipped with unexploded suicide vests and multiple weapons.

The announcement coincided with a visit by Syria’s interim Foreign Minister to Iraq, emphasizing cooperation against IS remnants.

This operation marks a significant blow to IS, which has continued to pose threats despite losing territorial control in Iraq and Syria. The group’s remnants remain active, conducting sporadic attacks in both countries.
