Jaishankar Hails Armenia-Azerbaijan Peace Treaty as Win for Dialogue & Diplomacy

India External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hailed the recent Armenia-Azerbaijan peace treaty signed in Washington as an “important achievement” for dialogue and diplomacy, aligning with India’s long-stated advocacy for peaceful conflict resolution. Jaishankar spoke directly with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan to congratulate him, emphasizing that the accord exemplifies India’s support for diplomatic solutions.

The peace deal—brokered by the United States and witnessed at a White House summit—marks the end of decades of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, especially over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. Besides supporting dialogue, Jaishankar’s remarks place India squarely in the camp of international actors promoting peaceful negotiations over military solutions.

It is expected to normalize bilateral relations, open trade and travel routes, and uphold the territorial integrity of both states.

The agreement includes principles but leaves some implementation details for future negotiations.

International leaders, including the US, have celebrated the deal as a stabilizing breakthrough for the entire Caucasus region, with hope it will serve as a model for resolving other regional disputes.

Jaishankar’s public endorsement reflects both India’s diplomatic priorities and the broader global consensus praising this peace agreement as a significant diplomatic milestone.
