Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu Dies at 56 After Cardiac Arrest
Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) senior leader and state minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu died in the early hours of Sunday, September 6, at the age of 56. His death came after his health suddenly deteriorated late Saturday night in Giridih.
Kumar, a two-term legislator from the Giridih Sadar constituency, was serving as Jharkhand’s Minister for Higher and Technical Education and Urban Development. He also held responsibilities for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs.
According to reports, Kumar complained of chest discomfort at his residence late Saturday night. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Giridih, where he died during treatment after suffering a cardiac arrest.
Kumar first entered the Jharkhand Assembly in 2019 and retained the Giridih seat in the 2024 election. He subsequently joined Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s cabinet and became one of the government’s prominent ministers.
The JMM expressed shock and grief over his sudden death, calling it an “irreparable loss” for the party, the Jharkhand government and the state. Party leaders and supporters gathered in Giridih following news of his death.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren also paid tribute to Kumar, remembering him as a close senior colleague and describing his death as a deeply personal loss.
Kumar’s sudden passing has left a significant gap in the Jharkhand government, particularly because he was handling several major portfolios spanning education, urban development, tourism and youth affairs.
