Kerala High Court Designates Guinness World Record Holder P.B. Menon as Senior Advocate Ahead of His 100th Birthday

The Kerala High Court has designated veteran lawyer P. Balasubramanian Menon, popularly known as P.B. Menon, as a Senior Advocate in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to the legal profession. The designation took effect on October 12, 2026, shortly before he turns 100 on October 15.

Menon holds the Guinness World Record for the longest career as a practising lawyer. He earned the distinction in 2023 after completing more than 73 years in the profession and has continued his association with legal practice, taking his career beyond 76 years.

The designation was approved following an initiative by Kerala High Court Chief Justice Soumen Sen. The decision recognises Menon’s decades of professional experience and his enduring commitment to the legal system.

Born in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Menon began practising law in 1950 at the Madras High Court. During his early years, he trained under Kuttikrishnan Menon, who served as Advocate General. After approximately two years, he returned to Palakkad and continued his legal career under criminal lawyer K.S. Ramakrishna Iyer.

Although Menon initially handled criminal matters, he later developed a specialisation in civil law. His professional journey has largely been centred on district-level courts, where he has continued to practise over several decades.

The designation is particularly noteworthy because it may be among the first instances of the Kerala High Court conferring the Senior Advocate designation on a lawyer whose practice is primarily based in the mofussil, or district-level, courts rather than the High Court itself.

Under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961, a High Court may designate an advocate as a Senior Advocate if the advocate’s ability, standing at the Bar, special knowledge or experience in law warrants such recognition. The designation distinguishes advocates who have made notable contributions to the profession.

Menon’s recognition ahead of his centenary birthday highlights a rare professional journey spanning more than seven decades of India’s legal history. His career began in the year India became a republic and has continued through major transformations in the country’s judicial institutions and legal framework.

The honour also draws attention to the importance of district-court practitioners, whose work forms a vital part of the justice delivery system. Menon’s long career stands as an example of sustained professional dedication, experience and service to the legal profession.

As he approaches his 100th birthday, the Senior Advocate designation marks another significant milestone in the life of a lawyer whose professional longevity has earned international recognition and whose career remains closely associated with the courts of Kerala.
