Kuno National Park records first wild birth of Cheetah, four cubs arrive in reintroduction programme

Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh has achieved a major milestone with the first recorded wild birth of cheetah cubs in India’s reintroduction program.

Birth Details

A 25-month-old Indian-born female cheetah, daughter of Gamini, gave birth to four cubs on April 10, 2026, after over a year in the wild. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav hailed it as a “historic moment,” confirming the mother and cubs are healthy without human intervention. This marks the first wild reproduction by a second-generation cheetah since the 2022 project launch.

Project Background

Project Cheetah began in September 2022 with cheetahs translocated from Namibia and South Africa to Kuno after the species’ extinction in India in 1952. Prior captive or semi-wild births occurred, like Mukhi’s five cubs in November 2025, but this is the first fully wild event by an India-born mother. The park’s habitat now supports hunting of prey like chital, proving adaptation success.

Conservation Impact

This birth boosts India’s cheetah population beyond 50 and validates Kuno’s suitability despite earlier criticisms of its wooded terrain. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and forest officials celebrated it as a global biodiversity win. Ongoing monitoring ensures cub survival amid natural challenges like predation.
