Lionel Messi event in India marred by fan chaos
Lionel Messi’s GOAT India Tour event in Kolkata turned chaotic due to fan frustration. The incident occurred at Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, 2025.
Messi appeared for about 20 minutes, waving to fans alongside teammates like Rodrigo de Paul and Luis Suarez, but a crowd of officials and celebrities blocked views for many ticket holders who paid up to 12,000 rupees. The brief stint ended abruptly amid booing toward organizers and politicians, prompting security to escort him away early.
Angry supporters ripped seats, hurled bottles, chairs, and objects onto the pitch, damaged hoardings, and some climbed barriers, leading to injuries and a baton charge by police. Videos showed hundreds invading the field and vandalizing goal nets at the 85,000-capacity venue.
The main organizer, Satadru Dutta, was detained for investigation into mismanagement and security lapses. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologized to Messi and ordered a high-level probe. The tour continues in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi with planned concerts, training, and charity events.
