List of dead soon, verifying, Will probe reports of ‘2nd stampede’ at Maha Kumbh: DIG

Second Stampede Reported: A second stampede occurred at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, just hours after the first tragic incident that resulted in at least 30 fatalities. This second incident was reported from Jhusi, approximately 2 km away from the initial stampede site at Sangam Nose, raising serious concerns about crowd management during the event.

Casualty Reports: While eyewitnesses claim multiple deaths occurred in the Jhusi stampede, official confirmation of the exact number of casualties is still pending. Local accounts suggest that at least 24 people may have died in this incident alone, with disturbing reports of bodies left unattended for hours.

Investigations Underway: A judicial commission has been formed to investigate the initial stampede and is also looking into reports of the second incident. The commission is examining CCTV footage to identify any additional incidents that might have gone unreported during the massive gathering of devotees.

Response and Safety Concerns: The chaos was exacerbated by poor crowd control and delayed emergency response. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as devotees rushed towards the ghats, leading to dangerous overcrowding. Authorities are under scrutiny for their handling of safety measures at this large religious gathering, which saw over 55 million attendees.

Official Statements: Mela authorities have initially denied reports of a second stampede but are now conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding both incidents. The DIG has stated that they are reviewing all available footage to ascertain the facts.
