New TRAI Rule: Names of original callers to display on screen when getting calls

TRAI has approved a new rule for Calling Name Presentation (CNAP), enabling the display of the original registered name of callers on recipients’ screens by default.

This service shows the caller’s verified name as per their KYC details during incoming calls, aiming to reduce fraud, spam, and cybercrimes like digital arrests. Users can opt out if they prefer not to see names, and it applies mainly to 4G and newer networks due to technical limits on older ones.

Callers with Calling Line Identification Restriction (CLIR), such as intelligence officers or verified dignitaries, remain exempt from name display. Implementation requires device updates, with new phones sold in India mandated to support it within six months of notification.

TRAI initially recommended opt-in activation in February 2024, but agreed to DoT’s push for default enablement in October 2025 to enhance security. Telecom operators will handle verification, excluding bulk connections and telemarketers.
