New Zealand’s Snares Islands hit by 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake

6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of New Zealand’s Snares Islands on March 25, 2025, at 2:43 PM local time. The epicenter was located approximately 155 km north-west of the islands at a depth of 12 km under the sea. Despite the earthquake’s strength, authorities have confirmed that there is no tsunami threat to the region, although they warned of potential dangers from strong currents and surges along the coast.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has advised residents and visitors along the West Coast of the South Island, particularly from Milford Sound to Puysegur Point, to stay away from the water due to the risk of unpredictable surges and strong currents. The agency noted that these conditions could pose significant hazards to swimmers, surfers, and anyone near the shore.

Reports indicate that nearly 5,000 people felt the tremors across various locations in the lower South Island, including cities like InvercargillDunedin, and Queenstown. While some residents described the quake as a “good shake,” there have been no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Emergency alerts have been issued, but evacuations are not currently required. NEMA is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
