Paris AI Summit: US and UK refuse to sign Paris AI Summit declaration
The United States and the United Kingdom declined to sign the Paris AI Action Summit’s declaration promoting “inclusive and sustainable” artificial intelligence. The agreement, which was endorsed by 60 nations, including India, China, Japan, Australia, and Canada, aims to establish ethical, transparent, and secure AI governance frameworks.
United States: The U.S. did not provide a specific explanation for not signing the declaration.
United Kingdom: A UK government representative stated that the declaration “didn’t provide enough practical clarity on global governance, nor sufficiently address harder questions around national security and the challenge AI poses to it”. The UK preferred not to endorse initiatives that did not serve its national interest.
JD Vance’s Critique: US Vice President JD Vance cautioned against “excessive regulation of the AI sector [that] could kill a transformative industry”. He argued that stringent oversight could hinder technological progress and criticized the European Union’s regulatory stance.
The declaration emphasizes ensuring AI is open, inclusive, transparent, ethical, safe, secure, and trustworthy, while considering international frameworks. It also promotes the deployment of AI that positively influences the future of work and labor markets and emphasizes the sustainability of AI for people and the planet.
