Same-Sex Marriage Law Comes Into Effect In Thailand, Hundreds Take Wedding Vows

Hundreds of same-sex couples in Thailand celebrated the legalization of same-sex marriage on January 23, 2025, marking a historic milestone for LGBTQ+ rights in the country. This law makes Thailand the first Southeast Asian nation to recognize marriage equality and the third in Asia, following Taiwan and Nepal.

Mass Weddings: The day saw numerous ceremonies, including a mass wedding organized by Bangkok Pride, where over 200 couples participated. Couples dressed in various wedding outfits gathered at a shopping mall to officially register their marriages.

Emotional Celebrations: Among the first couples to marry were Apiwat “Porsch” Apiwatsayree and Sappanyoo “Arm” Panatkool, who expressed their joy and relief after years of advocacy for equal rights. They were handed their marriage certificates amid tears of happiness.

Legal Framework: The new law replaces traditional gendered terms with gender-neutral language, allowing all couples, including transgender individuals, to marry. It also grants rights related to adoption and inheritance, significantly enhancing legal protections for same-sex couples.

Government Support: Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra publicly celebrated the law’s enactment, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to embracing diversity and love in all forms. The legislation was passed with overwhelming support from both government and opposition parties earlier in 2024.

This landmark legislation is seen as a significant step forward for LGBTQ+ rights in Thailand, reflecting a broader movement towards equality and acceptance within the region.
