Swatantra Bhardwaj Detained in UP Over Alleged Assault on Student Protester’s Father
Social media influencer and activist Swatantra Bhardwaj has been detained in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, in connection with an alleged assault on the father of a student protester during a demonstration at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. Delhi Police confirmed the detention after a search operation in Uttar Pradesh.
The case relates to an incident involving Sanjay Kumar, the father of student activist Nishu Azad. According to reports, Kumar was allegedly assaulted during a protest associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Bhardwaj and another person, Suraj Kumar, were named as accused in the Delhi Police FIR.
The controversy intensified after a podcast clip circulated widely on social media. In the clip, Bhardwaj was reported to have claimed that he had “cracked the skull” of the protester’s father and described how he allegedly avoided arrest. The remarks triggered renewed demands for immediate police action.
Bhardwaj, however, has offered a different account of the confrontation. Reports say he has claimed that he acted in self-defence and argued that the situation could have escalated into mob violence if he had not intervened. He has also disputed aspects of the allegations against him.
The police investigation has also complicated some of the claims surrounding the severity of the injuries. The Delhi Police has said that the medical evidence did not support the description of a skull fracture and characterized the injury as being caused by a metal bracelet, according to the Indian Express report. Police have denied allegations that political interference prevented action in the case.
The legal action subsequently expanded. Reports indicate that provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and criminal intimidation were added to the case, while a separate case was reportedly registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The precise applicability of these provisions will ultimately be determined through the legal process.
Bhardwaj’s detention came after mounting pressure on Delhi Police. Members and supporters of the CJP had protested outside Parliament Street Police Station, demanding his arrest and stronger legal action over the alleged assault. Police had earlier indicated that action against him would follow within 72 hours.
According to reports, police teams traced Bhardwaj to Bulandshahr after he left his earlier location. Some reports say he attempted to evade the police before eventually being apprehended. The detention therefore marked a significant development in a case that had remained under intense public scrutiny following the viral video.
By September 5, reports said Bhardwaj had been formally arrested and produced before a court, which sent him to one day of police custody. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining the available video evidence, medical records and witness accounts.
The case has consequently moved beyond a dispute at a protest site and become a wider debate over violence at demonstrations, accountability for politically active social-media personalities, and the role of viral online statements in triggering renewed criminal investigations. The allegations against Bhardwaj remain allegations unless established through the judicial process.
