Yemen’s Houthis Say Launched Missiles At US Aircraft Carrier, Israeli Airport

Yemen’s Houthi group has recently claimed responsibility for launching missile attacks against a U.S. aircraft carrier and targets in Israel. These attacks occurred amidst ongoing tensions and military actions involving the Houthis, the U.S., and Israel.

Targets The Houthis said they targeted Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport with a ballistic missile, as well as a military target south of Tel Aviv. They also claimed to have targeted U.S. warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, in the Red Sea.

Israeli Response The Israeli military reported intercepting two missiles launched from Yemen before they crossed into Israeli territory. Air raid sirens were activated in multiple areas, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Houthi Motivation The Houthis said these actions were in retaliation for U.S. “aggression” against Yemen and in support of Palestinians in Gaza. They have vowed to continue targeting Israeli cities and Israeli-linked ships in the Red Sea until the war on Gaza stops.

U.S. Response The U.S. Central Command launched a “large scale operation” involving airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. Washington has vowed to use overwhelming force until the Houthis cease their attacks on vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Casualties The Houthis reported that two people were killed in overnight U.S. airstrikes near Sanaa.

Ongoing Conflict Since the beginning of 2024, a U.S.-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes against Houthi locations in Yemen in response to the group’s attacks in the Red Sea.
