Narendra Modi Congratulates Giorgia Meloni on Record Tenure as Italy’s Longest-Serving Postwar PM
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 4 congratulated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni after her government became the longest continuously serving administration in Italy’s postwar history.
Modi described the milestone as a reflection of the trust and confidence placed in Meloni’s leadership by the Italian people. He also praised her friendship and role in strengthening relations between India and Italy.
Meloni, who became Prime Minister in October 2022, completed 1,413 consecutive days in office, surpassing the previous postwar record held by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
In his congratulatory message, Modi said Meloni’s friendship had been instrumental in strengthening the India-Italy Special Strategic Partnership. He expressed his desire to continue close cooperation between the two countries and work toward a prosperous future for their people.
Meloni later thanked Modi for his message and friendship, saying that the relationship between Italy and India was “stronger than ever.” She also highlighted continued cooperation under the countries’ Special Strategic Partnership.
The exchange comes as New Delhi and Rome seek to deepen economic and strategic cooperation, including collaboration connected with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
Meloni celebrated the political milestone at a rally in Bari, presenting the longevity of her government as evidence of greater political stability in Italy. Supporters have pointed to economic and foreign-policy achievements, while critics continue to raise concerns about stagnant growth and unresolved structural problems.
The congratulatory messages from Modi and Meloni also underscore the increasingly close political rapport between the two leaders and the broader effort to strengthen India-Italy ties.
