Indonesian rescuers retrieve body from Mount Dukono as search continues
Indonesian rescuers recovered the body of a local woman named Enjel from Mount Dukono on Halmahera island following a volcanic eruption on May 8, 2026. The search continues for two missing Singaporean hikers amid ongoing volcanic activity.
Mount Dukono erupted on Friday, trapping multiple hikers and leading to at least three confirmed deaths, including Enjel, a known local hiker found 50 meters from the main crater. Rescue operations paused briefly due to intense eruptions but resumed Saturday.
Rescuers in orange gear navigated rocky terrain near the eruption site under ash-filled skies, highlighting the hazardous conditions.
Seventeen other hikers were evacuated safely earlier, but the two Singaporeans remain unlocated as teams face high risks from continuous ash plumes and instability. Iwan Ramdani, head of the local Search and Rescue Office, confirmed Enjel’s recovery and noted persistent challenges.
Mount Dukono, on remote Halmahera in North Maluku, produced massive ash plumes visible from afar, stranding groups during the climb.
Rescue workers carried an injured hiker on a stretcher through dense forest trails, part of the broader evacuation efforts.
