Putin Receives Grand Welcome in China but Returns Without Major Pipeline Agreement
Vladimir Putin received a high-profile and ceremonious welcome during his visit to Beijing, where Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed the growing strategic partnership between China and Russia. The visit showcased strong diplomatic symbolism, military cooperation, and expanding economic ties between the two nations. However, despite the warm public display of unity, Putin returned to Moscow without securing a long-anticipated agreement on the proposed “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline project.
The pipeline, expected to transport large quantities of Russian natural gas to China through Mongolia, has been viewed by Moscow as a critical project for offsetting the loss of European energy markets following Western sanctions and the ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding the Ukraine conflict. Russia has been eager to finalize the deal to strengthen its energy exports toward Asia, particularly as Europe continues reducing dependence on Russian gas supplies.
While both sides emphasized cooperation in trade, energy, and regional security, Chinese officials appeared cautious about committing to the pipeline under Russia’s preferred terms. Despite the absence of a final agreement, the visit still highlighted the increasingly close relationship between Beijing and Moscow. The leaders presented a united front against what they describe as Western dominance in global affairs and reiterated support for a multipolar world order. Trade between the two countries continues to grow rapidly, with energy remaining a central pillar of cooperation.
The outcome of the visit illustrates both the strengths and limitations of the China-Russia partnership. Politically and strategically, the two countries continue to move closer together. Economically, however, major deals still depend on hard negotiations driven by national interests rather than symbolic diplomacy alone.
