“Very Deceptive”: Supreme Court of India Raises Concern Over Sale of Alcohol in Tetra Packs
The Supreme Court of India has expressed serious concern over the sale of alcoholic beverages in tetra packs, describing the practice as “very deceptive” due to the possibility of such packaging misleading consumers, especially children and the general public. The Court observed that alcohol packaged in juice-like cartons could easily resemble soft drinks or health beverages, increasing the risk of accidental consumption and normalizing alcohol use in society.
During the hearing, the apex court reportedly questioned the manner in which liquor companies market alcoholic products using attractive packaging that may blur the distinction between alcohol and ordinary consumer beverages. The bench emphasized that public health and consumer awareness are crucial considerations, particularly when packaging has the potential to conceal the true nature of the product.
