CNG Prices Hiked Again Across India, Fuel Cost Burden Deepens for Consumers

Delhi, Mumbai and Several Major Cities See Fresh CNG Rate Increase Amid Rising Energy Costs

Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices have once again been increased across several Indian cities, adding further pressure on household budgets, transport operators, and daily commuters. The latest round of hikes comes amid continued volatility in global energy markets and growing concerns over fuel inflation.

According to recent revisions by city gas distributors, CNG prices in Delhi have risen by ₹2 per kilogram, taking the retail rate to ₹83.09 per kg. This marks the fourth increase in less than two weeks, resulting in a cumulative rise of around ₹6 per kg during May. Similar hikes have been reported across the National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, Ghaziabad, Greater Noida, and Gurugram.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has also witnessed a fresh increase. Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) raised CNG prices by ₹2 per kg, pushing rates to ₹86 per kg in Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and surrounding areas. This is the second price revision in the region during the month.

Global Energy Turmoil Driving Domestic Fuel Costs

Industry analysts attribute the repeated hikes to elevated international crude oil and natural gas prices. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, concerns regarding energy supply routes, and uncertainty in global markets have increased procurement costs for Indian gas distributors. Since India imports a significant portion of its energy requirements, fluctuations in international prices directly affect domestic fuel rates.

Experts note that city gas distribution companies have been gradually passing on higher input costs to consumers. Rising imported gas prices and transportation expenses have forced firms to revise retail rates multiple times in recent weeks.

Impact on Public Transport and Daily Commuters

The latest increase is expected to hit auto-rickshaw drivers, taxi operators, commercial vehicle owners, and middle-class commuters the hardest. Several transport unions have already expressed concerns that repeated fuel hikes are reducing earnings while operational costs continue to rise. Demands for fare revisions are likely to intensify in major metropolitan areas.

With more than 12 lakh CNG-powered vehicles operating in the Mumbai region alone and millions of CNG users across Delhi-NCR, the cumulative effect of the hikes could significantly influence transportation costs and urban inflation.

Political Reactions and Public Concern

The fresh price hike has triggered political criticism, with opposition leaders accusing the government of failing to control inflation and fuel costs. Consumer groups have also questioned the frequency of revisions, arguing that repeated increases disproportionately affect working-class families that shifted to CNG as a cheaper alternative to petrol and diesel.
