Singapore Orders Blocking of Online Posts Targeting Indian Community, Citing Threat to Racial Harmony
Singapore has directed major social media platforms to block access to a series of online posts targeting the country’s Indian community, saying the content threatens the nation’s longstanding commitment to multiculturalism and social cohesion. Authorities ordered YouTube, Facebook, and X to disable access in Singapore to 14 identified posts under the country’s Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA) after investigations indicated that the material most likely originated from a China-based platform before spreading across other websites and social media channels.
According to Singapore’s Ministry of Home Affairs, the posts promoted narratives suggesting that the country was being “overrun” by Indians and sought to create distrust and hostility between different ethnic communities. Officials stated that such content was designed to undermine Singapore’s model of multiculturalism, which has been a cornerstone of national policy since independence. The police issued disabling directions requiring the platforms to take all reasonable steps to prevent users in Singapore from accessing the flagged content.
Singapore’s Second Minister for Home Affairs, Edwin Tong, emphasized that the government will not tolerate attempts by foreign actors to sow racial discord. He stated that the videos and posts seek to divide people based on race and do not reflect Singapore’s values, where every community is regarded as an equal part of society. Authorities also said they will continue monitoring online platforms and take further action whenever content threatens social harmony.
The issue is particularly sensitive in Singapore, a multicultural nation of more than six million people where the majority are of Chinese descent, while significant Malay and Indian communities form important pillars of society. Maintaining racial and religious harmony has long been a central objective of government policy, with strict laws addressing hate speech and attempts to incite communal tensions.
The action also highlights Singapore’s increasing use of the Online Criminal Harms Act, which grants authorities powers to require online service providers to restrict or disable access to content linked to specified harms. Officials framed the latest move as a response not only to offensive material but also to what they consider a potential foreign information campaign capable of undermining national unity and public confidence in Singapore’s multicultural framework.
