CBI Raids Former Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel’s Residence

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted searches at the residences of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel in Raipur and Bhilai on March 26, 2025. This operation resulted in the seizure of approximately Rs 30 lakh in cash and is linked to an ongoing investigation into a significant liquor scam that allegedly caused a loss of around Rs 2,161 crore to the state exchequer.

These raids come shortly after similar actions by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which had previously searched Baghel’s residence in connection with the same liquor scam. The CBI’s investigation also appears to involve the Mahadev Online Betting App case, which has been associated with illegal betting and money laundering activities estimated to be worth over Rs 6,000 crore.

Baghel’s office noted that he was scheduled to attend an important Congress meeting in Delhi on the same day as the raids. In response to the CBI’s actions, Baghel’s supporters expressed their discontent, suggesting that these investigations may be politically motivated attempts to harass opposition figures.

The CBI has not publicly detailed the specific reasons for their searches but has been focusing on various corruption cases linked to the previous Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh.
