Fresh Political Storm in West Bengal as TMC Leaders Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee Allege Attacks
Political tensions in West Bengal have sharply escalated after senior leaders of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), including Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee, allegedly came under attack in separate incidents within 24 hours. The back-to-back confrontations have triggered a fierce political battle between the ruling TMC and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with both sides exchanging accusations over political violence in the state.
Abhishek Banerjee Alleges Assault During Sonarpur Visit
The controversy began when Abhishek Banerjee claimed he was attacked while visiting Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas to meet families of alleged victims of post-poll violence. According to the TMC leader, stones, eggs, and bricks were thrown at him, and one brick reportedly struck his eye. He described the episode as a “BJP-sponsored attack” and announced plans to pursue legal action.
The incident quickly became a major political flashpoint, with opposition leaders and INDIA bloc allies expressing solidarity. Banerjee later thanked Rahul Gandhi for his support and said opposition parties would remain united against the BJP.
Kalyan Banerjee Claims Head Injury in Hooghly Clash
Just a day later, Kalyan Banerjee alleged that he was attacked near Chanditala Police Station in Hooghly district while leading a delegation seeking action regarding post-poll violence and arrests of TMC workers. Banerjee claimed that BJP supporters assaulted him and that he suffered a head injury during the confrontation.
Calling the incident an “attempt to murder,” the TMC MP accused BJP workers of orchestrating a planned attack. The BJP, however, rejected the allegations and denied any involvement.
Mamata Banerjee Launches Sharp Attack on BJP
Reacting to both incidents, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of “murdering democracy” and claimed that opposition-backed violence was being used to intimidate TMC leaders and workers. She visited Kalyan Banerjee after the alleged assault and strongly condemned the incidents.
The Chief Minister argued that the attacks reflected a dangerous deterioration of democratic norms and accused political opponents of creating an atmosphere of fear in the state.
Hospital Treatment Row Deepens Controversy
The political confrontation intensified further after Mamata Banerjee accused two private hospitals of failing to properly treat Abhishek Banerjee following the alleged attack. She alleged that pressure was exerted on hospital authorities and doctors to avoid admitting him for treatment. According to her, hospital officials informed her that they were receiving threatening calls and facing pressure from powerful quarters.
Mamata questioned why Abhishek was initially placed under observation and subjected to medical examinations if doctors later claimed hospitalization was unnecessary.
However, hospital officials stated that preliminary examinations indicated only superficial injuries and that hospital admission was not medically required. Medical staff reportedly found no major physical trauma apart from minor bruises, though additional tests were conducted for evaluation.
Growing Political Turbulence Inside TMC
The developments have emerged at a sensitive moment for the TMC. Reports indicate that a scheduled meeting of newly elected TMC legislators had to be deferred after a large number of MLAs did not attend, leading to speculation about internal unease and organizational challenges following recent electoral setbacks.
The party has also witnessed internal controversies in recent days, including public disagreements involving senior leaders.
BJP Rejects Allegations
The BJP has dismissed the accusations made by TMC leaders and denied responsibility for the alleged attacks. Party leaders have accused the ruling party of attempting to politicize isolated incidents and divert attention from governance and law-and-order concerns.
The political rivalry between the TMC and BJP has frequently resulted in allegations of violence, intimidation, and partisan policing, particularly during election periods and post-poll phases.
What Happens Next?
The alleged attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee have once again placed West Bengal’s political climate under national scrutiny. With the TMC demanding investigations, the BJP rejecting the charges, and Mamata Banerjee raising concerns about medical treatment and political intimidation, the controversy is expected to intensify further in the coming days. Authorities are likely to face growing pressure to establish the facts behind the incidents and prevent further escalation of political violence in the state.
