Massive Sand Dust Storm Hits Rajasthan, Turns Day Into Night Across Churu Region
A powerful sand and dust storm swept across large parts of Rajasthan on Saturday afternoon, engulfing towns in thick clouds of dust and reducing visibility to near zero in several areas. The worst-hit district was Churu, where dramatic scenes showed black-and-yellow walls of sand swallowing roads, homes, and marketplaces as strong winds raced across the desert landscape.
According to reports, the storm struck around 2 PM and was accompanied by wind speeds approaching 70 kmph. Visibility dropped to only a few meters in places such as Churu and Sardarshahar, forcing motorists to halt their vehicles and switch on headlights in broad daylight. Residents rushed indoors as swirling dust engulfed entire neighborhoods, creating apocalyptic scenes rarely witnessed even in Rajasthan’s desert belt.
Meteorologists link the event to an intense interaction between extreme heat conditions and a western disturbance moving across northwestern India. In recent days, temperatures in several parts of Rajasthan had surged above 47°C, creating unstable atmospheric conditions. The arrival of moisture-bearing winds triggered powerful gust fronts capable of lifting enormous quantities of loose desert sand into the atmosphere.
The storm was followed by scattered rainfall in parts of Churu district, bringing temporary relief from the severe heatwave gripping the state. Weather officials indicated that temperatures dropped by as much as 8°C after the storm and subsequent showers. However, concerns remain over possible damage to standing crops, power infrastructure, trees, and transportation networks.
The India Meteorological Department has already been warning of volatile weather patterns across Rajasthan, including thunderstorms, dust storms, gusty winds, and localized rainfall. Experts say such events are becoming increasingly intense as prolonged heatwaves combine with changing pre-monsoon weather systems.
The latest storm has revived memories of major dust events that have historically affected northwestern India, highlighting the vulnerability of desert regions to extreme weather. Authorities are monitoring conditions closely as additional dust storm and thunderstorm activity remains possible in parts of Rajasthan over the coming days.
