A major controversy has erupted in Bihar’s Bhojpur district following the death of 28-year-old Bharat Bhushan Tiwari during a police operation, triggering widespread protests, road blockades, and disciplinary action against police personnel. The incident has drawn public attention after videos circulating on social media appeared to raise questions about the circumstances leading to the encounter.
What Happened?
According to police officials, a team reached Bilauti village under Shahpur police station after receiving information that Bharat Bhushan Tiwari was allegedly carrying and displaying an illegal firearm. During the operation, tensions escalated, and police later claimed that an exchange of fire took place in which Tiwari was injured. He was subsequently taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), where he later died during treatment.
However, the official version has been challenged by Tiwari’s family and several local residents. Viral videos reportedly show Tiwari holding a pistol while speaking with police officers and, according to family members, surrendering before the alleged encounter occurred. These videos have fueled allegations that the subsequent shooting may have been unnecessary.
Police Action: Officers Suspended
In response to growing public outrage, senior Bihar Police officials initiated a preliminary inquiry. Following the inquiry, the Shahpur Station House Officer (SHO), a Sub-Inspector, and a constable were suspended for alleged lapses in handling the operation. Some reports indicate that four police personnel have been suspended pending a detailed investigation. Authorities stated that the officers failed to demonstrate adequate preparedness and response during the high-risk situation.
Family Alleges Fake Encounter
Tiwari’s family has strongly disputed the police narrative. His parents and siblings claim that he had already surrendered and was not posing an immediate threat when he was shot. Family members have demanded an independent and impartial investigation into the incident and have accused the police of carrying out a “fake encounter.”
The family further stated that Bharat Bhushan Tiwari was known locally for raising issues related to flooding, erosion, and public welfare in the village. They insist that justice must be delivered and those responsible held accountable if wrongdoing is established.
Massive Protests and Highway Blockade
Public anger intensified after Tiwari’s death. Villagers and supporters placed his body on the Ara–Buxar four-lane highway and staged a prolonged blockade that disrupted traffic for several hours. Protesters demanded a judicial inquiry and strict action against the officers involved.
As negotiations between protesters and authorities failed to immediately resolve the standoff, police reportedly conducted a lathi-charge to clear the highway and restore traffic movement. The confrontation further heightened tensions in the area.
