Rahul Gandhi calls PM Modi’s ‘don’t buy gold for a year, WFH’ appeal ‘proof of failure’
Rahul Gandhi recently criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for public sacrifices amid economic pressures from the West Asia conflict. He labeled these suggestions as “proof of failure” in the government’s decade-long policies.
Prime Minister Modi urged citizens at a BJP rally in Hyderabad to postpone gold purchases for a year, reduce petrol and diesel use, cut fertilizer and cooking oil consumption, avoid foreign travel, take the metro, carpool, shift to electric vehicles, and work from home where possible. This aimed to conserve foreign exchange reserves strained by global tensions, including the US-Iran war.
In an X post on May 11, 2026, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, stated: “Yesterday, Modi ji asked the public to make sacrifices—don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, use less petrol… These aren’t sermons—they’re proof of failure.” He accused the PM of shifting responsibility to citizens to evade accountability after 12 years in power, calling Modi a “Compromised PM” unable to run the country effectively.
The remarks highlight opposition attacks on the BJP government’s energy security and economic management amid rising fuel prices and the Gulf crisis. Similar critiques came from leaders like Akhilesh Yadav, framing the appeals as admissions of policy shortcomings.
